Total Ankle Arthroplasty (TAA)

When a person experiences ankle joint injury or degeneration, most commonly due to advanced arthritic conditions, they may be a candidate for total ankle arthroplasty.  This is also referred to as ankle replacement surgery.

When all non-surgical means have been used and the condition is not improving, the best next step is to consider a full replacement.  This procedure allows the patient to retain complete ankle joint motion while regaining pain free mobility with the placement of an implant.  It is not recommended for every patient as it is important that good blood circulation, muscle function and bone health are present in the lower extremity to ensure proper healing and reduced risk of infection.

During your examination the doctor will order the appropriate images, collect an in depth medical history and advise you on preparing for your surgery.  The doctor will also provide a specific set of recommendations to follow prior to your surgery.  For instance, quitting smoking, weight loss, vitamin D supplementation are common requirements.  On the day of your surgery you will be admitted and provided with the proper attire and asked to fill out any outstanding paperwork.

After surgery, your ankle will receive a cast in order to immobilize the ankle.  Recovery periods normally range from 6-8 weeks while moving through a post operative recovery program.  The patient will begin with a cast, move to a boot and then be able to wear normal shoes once the bone and tendons have healed and the ankle has regained its strength.  Physical therapy and strength training will help you experience a full recovery and regain full mobility once your doctor clears you for higher levels of activity.

Charcot Foot Surgery

As a severe foot condition, charcot foot requires surgical intervention in order to avoid complications and an experienced charcot foot surgeon should be consulted immediately.  If left untreated, it can lead to a need for foot amputation.  To learn more about the importance of treating this condition visit our Charcot foot conditions page.

Recovering from charcot foot surgery can require up to 2-3 months for a full recovery in cases that require a full foot reconstruction.  Again, the recovery process requires the patient to have the extremity cast, then be fitted for a walking boot and finally be approved for proper shoes or orthotics.  Our physical therapists will help you to regain full mobility as you recover.

Flatfoot Reconstruction Surgery

The pain and mobility challenges presented to people with flat feet can manifest in a number of different ways.  This may include heel pain, arch pain, problems with tendons and joint issues.  While the condition may be present in all ages, surgery is normally reserved for adults with progressive flatfoot that does not respond to conservative treatments.

Surgical intervention normally revolves around procedures such Osteotomy, Arthrodesis, lateral column lengthening, or tendon procedures that may be required in very advanced stages.  The recovery requires casting and immobilization as well as a recommendation to stay off your feet completely for about 4-6 weeks, progressing to full weight bearing in a time period of about 8-10 weeks.
