Ankle Instability

Chronic ankle instability can occur when the outer side of the ankle loses ligament strength due to repeated ankle sprains or trauma.  During an ankle sprain, ligaments are torn or stretched, which in turn affects the ability to balance properly.  Ankle instability can be debilitating as it leads to recurring injuries due to the ankle giving way while the individual is walking or participating in other everyday activities.  It is a common sports injury.

Diagnosing Ankle Instability

The podiatrist will ask about any past injuries or instability with the ankle.  The ankle is checked for tender areas, swelling, and your ankles instability.  Imaging studies, such as X-rays, Ultrasound, MRIs, or CT scans might be needed to assess the structural condition of the ankles ligaments and tissues.

Treating Ankle Instability

Rehabilitation through physical therapy, bracing or medications is necessary to strengthen ankle ligaments and muscles and to retrain the tissues of the ankle that impact balance.  Without the right rehabilitation, repeated ankle sprains will likely result.  In cases where physical therapy is not effective, or where ligaments may be torn surgical intervention to repair the ligaments may be recommended.
